Music written for meditation often frustrates me. Why? Because – right from the outset, it doesn’t meet ME where I’M AT in my everyday waking state. Indeed, it often seems to taunt me – leaving me feeling that I’m failing in my bid to relax, which can leave me more wound up than when I began!
Working in the field of relationships as I do, I know that the best way to connect with people is when we engage with them ‘in the conversation that they’re already having in their heads’.
It’s the same, I’ve come to realise, with music.
Recognising the cause of my frustration when it comes to meditation and relaxation, I commissioned talented musician Ian Scanlan (who has written all the background music for all my guided visualisation audios to date) to write a piece especially for me.
The gorgeous music initially contains a tempo that reflects our ‘every day’ experience – and then as the piece continues, a rhythm that reflects our heart beat is introduced. This then gently and imperceptibly begins to slow – and because our minds are now entrained with the rhythm, we gradually move from everyday beta waves to the alpha (meditation) state that we’re seeking. It all feels natural and effortless. And at the end of the session? You’ll find yourself feeling refreshed and lighter.
